FELUDA – the rapid test strip method to detect COVID-19

bioxone September 21, 2020September 21, 2020

-Ruchita Karmakar, Amity University Kolkata

A research team led by Debojyoti Chakraborty and Souvik Maiti of CSIR and TATA group came up with a new test named FELUDA  to detect COVID-19. It’s a paper test strip that gives a precise result within 30 minutes; Approved for commercial launch by the Drugs Controller General of India.

FNCAS9 Editor Linked Uniform Detection Assay (FELUDA)  uses the earliest developmental process of CRISPR gene-editing technology to detect the targeted genetic material of SARS-CoV2 that radially causes COVID-19. According to CSIR, this particular test equally works like that of the RT-PCR test.

The FELUDA rapid test strip is very much similar to the pregnancy test strip that changes color on detection. As per the researcher Dr. Debojyoti Chakraborty, the Cas9 protein is encrypted to interact with the SARS-CoV2 sequence in the host’s genetic material. The cas9-SARS-CoV2 complex is then pitted on the strip to detect whether the patient is positive for COVID-19 or otherwise.

A nominal cost of Rs.500 will grant an edge to detect COVID-19 in the best possible way.
