COVID-19, not just a pulmonary but also a cardiovascular disease!

bioxone September 11, 2020September 11, 2020

–Camelia Bhattacharyya, Amity University Kolkata

Our body is a natural and the most complicated machine and all of its parts are interrelated. Thus, any change in the environment of one part of the body is likely to cause other changes in most other parts. This theory also holds true when taking into account, the recent pandemic, the COVID-19.

Though the lungs get attacked by the virus first, the heart is also not safe. Researches show that the patients are likely to acquire acute cardiac injury due to the viral attack. Though the rate of patients whose cardiovascular system gets effected is roughly 8-12%, yet it’s difficult to ignore the role the cardiomyocytes play in causing the greater injury along with the virus itself during the infection period.

A very recent study showed how the sarcomeres of some patients were diced into pieces and some black holes instead of the normal DNA were seen in the infected cell nucleus. More detailed studies are yet to be conducted in this field.
