13 people from 8 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella muenster linked to bearded dragons, as of 25th September, according to the latest information released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Pet bearded dragons are likely the source of this outbreak as shown by Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence. From among 13 people who were interviewed by the CDC, 10 (77%) came in contact with bearded dragons before falling sick. The people ranged from less than 1 year old to 72 years old which included 5 children below the age of 5. The illnesses started on dates ranging from February 23 to August 22.
The droppings of bearded dragons can carry salmonella germs even if they look healthy and clean. These germs can easily spread to their bodies, habitats, and anywhere in their environment. People can get sick from touching the pet or anything around it. Symptoms of the infection include diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps that last for 4 to 7 days. So far there are 7 hospitalizations and no deaths.
The PulseNet system, which is the national subtyping network of public health and food regulatory agency laboratories, is being used to investigate the illness by CDC and public health officials.
