Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) is a method useful for the determination of chromosomal abnormalities in unborn children or fetuses. Although ancillary detection of occult malignancies upon routine NIPT has been observed and reported by numerous researchers, these studies were not destined for the evaluation of NIPT for cancer detection.
IPSec, a Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) pipeline, the sensitivity of which was scrutinized for the detection of cancer-specific copy number alterations (CNAs) in plasma tumor DNA (ctDNA) of patients suffering from breast cancer. The assessment was conducted to determine whether the detection of ctDNA was influenced by pregnancy with fetal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal circulation.
The sensitivity for the detection of cancer-specific CNAs in plasma cfDNA was found to be 95% and 15% of the detected cases were asymptomatic during blood sampling. Higher GIPSeq sensitivity was noted in pregnant as compared to non-pregnant however the limited sample size constricts definite conclusion.
