Is Covid-19 being partial towards certain blood groups

Study claims that individuals with blood type O are less inclined to get affected by the novel Coronavirus. For such blood type, developing symptoms like organ failures are also low. Nevertheless, individuals with blood groups A and AB are more susceptible to procuring this infection. There have been several studies conducted on SARS-CoV-1 that have put forward the information that a protective effect of anti-A antibodies against the entry of viral cells may be important for the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore this study was piloted to understand whether there were associations of the ABO blood groups, with different extremities of COVID-19.

The data collected was based on a number of factors. Through the study, it was found that ABO blood groups exhibited different risks of association for the infection. However, the distribution of ABO blood groups showed no sex and age predilections. Unambiguously, blood group A was seen to be associated with a higher risk whereas blood group O was associated with a lower risk, thus indicating that the ABO blood type may be a biomarker for differential susceptibility of COVID-19. Similar results were obtained in studies conducted in China (Zhao, Jiao, et al., 2020) and Hong Kong (Cheng, Yufeng, et al., 2005).

This study, conducted by Hoiland, R., et al., 2020 has been published in the journal “Blood Advances” .
