Rheumatoid arthritis patients may be afraid that the COVID-19 vaccination will have negative side effects, aggravating their disease. Some people have even said that they do not believe it is safe for them to get the vaccine. That, however, is not the case. According to specialists, the chances of this happening are extremely low, and it is never deadly. Experts also stated that individuals with certain underlying health issues should get the vaccine first, before others.
Safety of the COVID vaccine:
Patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal illnesses, such as inflammatory arthritis and lupus, were shown to be safe after two doses of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, according to recent research. Flares of these symptoms were rare after two doses. The study looked at 1,377 individuals with rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders and was published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology.
According to specialists, around 11% of individuals experienced flares following immunization that required treatment, although no severe flares were observed. The most famous research took place in Israel, which has one of the highest immunization rates in the world. Researchers presented their findings at the EULAR virtual conference in June 2021, and the article was published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases in May 2021. They discovered that 82 percent of patients with RA (the control group) had a robust immunological response to the vaccinations.
Early safety findings might help people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases overcome their fears of immunisation. The first author of the study in discussion, Caoilfhionn Connolly, of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine, said, “the findings show that the vaccinations are safe and should assuage any patients’ safety worries”.
The COVID Vaccine Well Tolerated By Lupus Patients:
Except for individuals with a documented allergy to a vaccine component or life-threatening illness, the American College of Rheumatology supports COVID immunisation for persons with lupus and other rheumatic illnesses (currently resulting in intensive care).
The Covid vaccination is often well tolerated in patients with lupus, according to recent research published in The Lancet journal. Only 3% of individuals (21 out of 693) experienced a medically verified lupus flare within three days following immunization. This resulted in a change in lupus therapy in the majority of instances (71%), and four of the 21 patients were hospitalized as a result of the flare-up.
