Immune Surveillance in Multiple Sclerosis via T cells

bioxone September 20, 2020September 20, 2020

– Sagnik Nag, Amity University Kolkata

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protects the CNS from physical injuries as well as portrays immuno-surveillance over a pathogenic attack. In recent scientific research conducted by Pappalardo et al. profiled the T-cells present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a healthy individual.

It is known that T-cells ( be it CD4+ or CD8+ cells) provide significant immune protection against invading pathogens. Disrupting T cell entry to the CNS can predispose individuals to the development of lethal virus infections.

This research work holds an imperative stance on how specific immunogenic responses without jeopardizing the sensitive environment of CSF can be initiated. Furthermore, they worked on a comparative experimental assay by comparing the CSF samples of a normal patient to the CSF sample of a patient affected with multiple sclerosis(MS). The comparative profiles provide an acute insight into the heightened expression of genes in T cells with MS. The reason for the same being related to T cell activation and cytotoxicity.
