Ear Acupuncture on Postoperative analgesia

bioxone November 13, 2020November 13, 2020

SRILAGNA SARKAR, AMITY UNIVERSITY KOLKATA

Acupuncture is used in releasing the somatic pain threshold. Ear Acupuncture is a new kind of hand acupuncture that has an ability to deliver quite an effective analgesia with a minute physiological pain following caesarean section, gastronomy and enterectomy.

A single-blinded randomized prospective clinical trial of 56 women, divided into two groups of 28 each undergoing hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia was carried out. Group-I patients received spinal anaesthesia along with electric ear acupuncture whereas, Group II patients received spinal anaesthesia alone. EEA ( electric ear acupuncture) was done by fine acupuncture needles (10mm x 30gauge) for four points of ear acupuncture,  Shen Men Point 55, Thalamus Point 26, Analgesia Point 3, and Uterus Point 58. After inserting the needles in their respective acupoints it was then connected to the electrode cords that were connected to the electro-acupuncture. At the end of the surgery, the fine needles were replaced with press needles in the respective acupoints, to be removed after 24 hrs.

The outcomes were that the Auricular acupuncture (EEA) was proven to be a useful analgesic adjuvant as it showed a reduction in analgesic requirements followed by abdominal hysterectomy and provided more satisfactory postoperative pain control in comparison with group II  patients who received spinal anaesthesia alone.
