DENMARK TO KILL UPTO 17 MILLION MINKS!

bioxone November 8, 2020November 7, 2020

Aakancha Shaw, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata

Minks are dark-coloured and carnivorous mammals. Denmark has always been Europe’s largest producer and exporter of mink furs. So, Why is Denmark planning to kill its mink population?

Recently, about 214 human COVID-19 cases in Denmark are related to minks.

A mink-variant mutation in the spike protein of the Sars-Cov-2 virus is probably what has the potential to spark a new pandemic in Denmark. The mutant variant can develop further to become completely resistant.  The Prime minister, Mette Frederiksen announced that the health authorities have found virus strains in humans and in minks which potentially lowered the efficacy of future vaccines and showed decreased sensitivity against antibodies. This poses a risk to human health and vaccine development as the mink population could contribute in some way to the transmission of the virus from minks to humans.

Hence, a new wave of coronavirus could be started by the COVID-19 mink variant This prompted Denmark to cull its mink population of up to 17 million.

Frederiksen stated that they had a greater responsibility towards the world.

Richismita Hazra, Amity University Kolkata Retrons are specific sequences found in the bacterial genome that consists of reverse transcriptase (RT) and a non-coding RNA (ncRNA). They are often regarded as a hybrid of “half-RNA and half single-stranded DNA” that are found in many bacterial species. Even though the use of retrons for the synthesis of […]
