COVID-19 or DENGUE?

bioxone September 10, 2020September 10, 2020

–Arpita  Adhikary, Amity University Kolkata

When the 21st century is facing pandemic, it is reported that Dengue and coronavirus share almost similar clinical features that cannot be discriminated. There are few independent research studies that observed false-positive tests for coronavirus.

In Singapore, two false-positive results from rapid serological testing for dengue was later confirmed to have COVID-19. 57-year-old man & woman with no medical and travel history got a positive result for dengue but due to bad health, a chest radiograph was done for SARS-CoV-2 via RT-PCR from nasopharyngeal swab, which returned positive.

In CSIR-IICB, five out of thirteen dengue antibody-positive serum samples showed false-positive results in SARS-CoV-2 in 2017. In Israel serum samples of 55 people were taken for SARS-CoV-2 infection, also undergo an ELISA test for assessment of serology status in patients with dengue. After analysis, 12 (21%) positive cases were detected. Though it is not expected to show false positive results as these viruses come from different families so there is a chance of cross-reactivity between dengue and SARS-COVID 19.
