The pandemic is storming through India at an alarming rate.  Since early March, daily case numbers have skyrocketed. Only a few months ago, antibody data suggested that many people in cities like Delhi and Chennai had already been infected, leading some researchers to believe that the worst of the pandemic had passed in the country. After peaking at around 100,000 COVID-19 infections per day in September, the number of cases in India began to decline. However, they began to rise again in March, reaching a new peak that is more than four times the previous one.

But after 8th May 2021,  it is being observed that cases are decreasing, but overall numbers remain high. Scientists are attempting to decipher several coronavirus variants that are currently circulating in India, where a ferocious second wave of COVID-19 has devastated the country and caught authorities off guard. After reaching an all-time high of over 4.14 lakh on May 6, daily cases have been declining in recent days. On Saturday, India observed the lowest daily increase in coronavirus infections in nearly three weeks, with more than 4,000 deaths, but health authorities said the pandemic’s cases and fatalities are quickly stabilizing.

When it comes to determining the spread of the virus in the community, the positivity rate is an important indicator. The overall rate of positive cases per test fell to 19.8 percent this week from 21.9 percent the previous week, according to federal health officials in a briefing, but they strongly advised that caution must be maintained.

After imposing strict lockdowns, cases in some Indian states hit by an initial surge in infections, such Maharashtra, and New Delhi, have steadily declined. Positive cases in Delhi have dropped to 11% of all tests, from more than 30% earlier this month, according to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. However, the state of West Bengal, which held elections last month, experienced the highest single-day increase. It ordered a 15-day state-wide partial lockdown until the end of May on Saturday. Some other states, such as Karnataka in the south, have also reported recent increases, implying that a drop in overall cases is still a long way off.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India’s daily COVID-19 recoveries outnumbered new cases for the fifth time in the last six days, bringing the total recoveries to 2,07,95,335. For the last three days, the rate of recovery has been higher than the number of active cases. According to ministry data, the number of individuals who recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours was 3,62,548, while the new cases recorded in the same period were 3,10,757. With Sunday’s count, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached almost 2,47,96,697, with 2,70,284 fatalities (1.09%). According to the report, active cases have decreased to 36,18,458 and account for 14.6 percent of total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 83.86 percent. Along with that, a total number of 18,22,20,164 vaccinations have been done with 17,33,232 doses administered in the last 24 hours. 

Researchers believe that the second wave of the pandemic is showing signs of stabilization. Some states have demonstrated a clear pattern, while some are concerned, and still others are on the rise. It’s a complicated picture, but, overall, the situation is improving, and they hope that efforts will continue to ensure further improvement and a rapid decline of this pandemic.
