Pediatric mesothelioma- A disease of a kind

bioxone October 15, 2020October 15, 2020

Sashreek Ganguli, Amity University Kolkata

Mesothelioma is a tumour caused by intake of asbestos fibers and forms within the peritoneum of lungs. The occurrence rate is high in people belonging to the age bracket of 80-84 years. To treat this, pemetrexed-based regimen with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) could be a commonly used, but long-term survival is rare with lifespan up to 12-21months, after diagnosis.

Apart from the adults, the paediatric population is simultaneously affected by the condition. Here it’s imperative to say that little was known about the characteristics of mesothelial tumors within the pediatric population. Hence, to further the knowledge on the condition in adolescents, scientists at the European Cooperative Study Group on Pediatric Rare Tumors (EXPeRT) reviewed past paediatric cases(1987-2018). They identified 33 patients and discovered the first tumour mainly within the peritoneum (23 patients).

The histology was multicystic mesothelioma in the peritoneum (MCM) (6 cases) or malignant mesothelioma (MM) (27 cases). There was documented evidence of exposure to asbestos in one case. Within, MM the response to permetrexed was 50% (i.e. 6/12) and survival rate to CRS-Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) after a follow-up of 6.7 years (range, 0–20), five-year overall and event-free survivals were 82.3% (95% CI, confidential interval ((CI), 67.8–99.9) and 45.1% (95% CI, 28.4–71.7), respectively. In MCM, all patients survived after surgery and CRS-HIPEC. Conclusively, paediatric mesothelioma is different from its adult form with lesser asbestos exposures, more primary tumours in the peritoneum. The cisplatin–pemetrexed regimen showed good efficacy.

Cancer Vaccines: A Concoction Strategy to fight Leukemia

bioxone October 15, 2020

Chitra Roy, University of Calcutta Leukemia is a malignancy of blood cells that starts to develop when the DNA of a single cell in the bone marrow mutates and fails to develop and function properly. These leukemia cells crowd out normal blood cells, making it difficult for the normal cells to do their job. Chronic […]

Sristi Raj Rai, Amity University Kolkata Wanderers outside our body are in search of nutrients and host to persist and multiply to survive on the planet. Obligate endoparasite of Apicomplexa phylum invades human – intermediate/secondary hosts. These single-celled eukaryotes are of high medical and agricultural importance. Members such as Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium falciparum can […]

Scientists identify a class of novel coronavirus in bats

BioTech Today June 15, 2021June 15, 2021

Sagnik Nag, Amity University, Kolkata Severe respiratory disease coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) results in the extensively devastating disease, COVID-19, of the recent century. One of the unsolved scientific concerns around SARS-CoV-2 is the animal lineage of this virus. Bats and pangolins are acknowledged as considerably reasonable reservoir hosts that harbor the highly related SARS-CoV-2 related viruses. Identification […]

The unconventional pathway of DNA double-strand break repair

BioTech Today July 16, 2021July 15, 2021

Avani Dave, Jai Hind College Breast cancer gene BRCA1 has marked its presence as a protein mostly known for being an active contributor in the hereditary associated breast cancer. Apart from being the villain, BRCA1 also plays an indispensable role in the cellular machinery that works towards repairing the double-strand DNA breakage. Recently, researchers from […]
