Pediatric mesothelioma- A disease of a kind

bioxone October 15, 2020October 15, 2020

Sashreek Ganguli, Amity University Kolkata

Mesothelioma is a tumour caused by intake of asbestos fibers and forms within the peritoneum of lungs. The occurrence rate is high in people belonging to the age bracket of 80-84 years. To treat this, pemetrexed-based regimen with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) could be a commonly used, but long-term survival is rare with lifespan up to 12-21months, after diagnosis.

Apart from the adults, the paediatric population is simultaneously affected by the condition. Here it’s imperative to say that little was known about the characteristics of mesothelial tumors within the pediatric population. Hence, to further the knowledge on the condition in adolescents, scientists at the European Cooperative Study Group on Pediatric Rare Tumors (EXPeRT) reviewed past paediatric cases(1987-2018). They identified 33 patients and discovered the first tumour mainly within the peritoneum (23 patients).

The histology was multicystic mesothelioma in the peritoneum (MCM) (6 cases) or malignant mesothelioma (MM) (27 cases). There was documented evidence of exposure to asbestos in one case. Within, MM the response to permetrexed was 50% (i.e. 6/12) and survival rate to CRS-Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) after a follow-up of 6.7 years (range, 0–20), five-year overall and event-free survivals were 82.3% (95% CI, confidential interval ((CI), 67.8–99.9) and 45.1% (95% CI, 28.4–71.7), respectively. In MCM, all patients survived after surgery and CRS-HIPEC. Conclusively, paediatric mesothelioma is different from its adult form with lesser asbestos exposures, more primary tumours in the peritoneum. The cisplatin–pemetrexed regimen showed good efficacy.

Cancer Vaccines: A Concoction Strategy to fight Leukemia

bioxone October 15, 2020

Chitra Roy, University of Calcutta Leukemia is a malignancy of blood cells that starts to develop when the DNA of a single cell in the bone marrow mutates and fails to develop and function properly. These leukemia cells crowd out normal blood cells, making it difficult for the normal cells to do their job. Chronic […]

Oncogenic mutations in K-Ras CaM interactions

BioTech Today July 27, 2021July 26, 2021

Husna, Amity University Kolkata What is K-Ras-CaM interaction? K-Ras is an oncogenic mutant that helps the cancer cells to proliferate, migrate, invade, and survive by assembling some signalling complexes. These complexes have a great therapeutic and mechanistic significance, however, to date, the functional and structural roles of K-Ras mutations within these complexes are not completely […]

COVID UPDATE: Is COVID-3D taking us a step ahead towards a vaccine and drug development?

bioxone September 11, 2020September 11, 2020

– Richismita Hazra, Amity University Kolkata SARS-CoV-2 being a new pathogen, did not restrict itself to accumulate mutations across its genes. Researchers from the University of Melbourne, in Australia, developed a new software tool COVID-3D,  which proofs itself to be powerful enough for harnessing genomic and protein information about the virus and its mutations which […]

Butterflies need cool shades to survive!

bioxone September 26, 2020September 26, 2020

Richismita Hazra, Amity University Kolkata Climatic variations affect the abundance, spread, and phenology of species. Removal of microclimates that the butterflies need to survive, along with drastic climatic variations has led to extreme weather alterations and temperature fluctuations. This has affected the survival of butterflies that are ectotherms and hence dependent on external sources of […]
