Cannabis: Common for Menopause symptom management?

bioxone September 29, 2020September 29, 2020

Prama Ghosh, Amity University Kolkata

A new study demonstrates that a developing number of women irrespective of age, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or mental health conditions are either using or have shown interest in using Cannabis for the management of troublesome menopause symptoms (Perimenopause) which includes hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia.

From a total of 232 ladies (mean age, 55.95 y) in Northern California who partook in the Midlife Women Veterans Health Survey, the greater part announced such troublesome indications as hot flashes and night sweats (54 %), sleep deprivation (27 %), and genitourinary symptoms (69 %).

It was found that approximately 27% of those tested reported having used or using cannabis to deal with their symptoms. Further 10% showed interest in using the psychoactive drug to manage menopause symptoms later on. Women using traditional menopause symptoms management such as hormone treatment were only 19%.

Despite being a common drug for perimenopause, the safety and effectiveness of cannabis are yet to be ascertained. The study, ‘Cannabis use for menopause symptom management among midlife women veterans,’ will be presented at the 2020 NAMS Virtual Annual Meeting which is focused on novel approaches for treating menopause symptoms, alongside several other presentations.
