D614G: NEW CORONAVIRUS MUTATIONS MAKES THE VIRUS EIGHT TIMES MORE INFECTIOUS

The research, confirms findings that D614G — one of many mutations in the concerning variants that have emerged in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil — makes the coronavirus 8times more infectious.

This novel coronavirus, D614G mutation in the spike protein renders it up to 8 times more infectious in human cells than the original virus that originated in China, according to a study. The spike protein is used by SARS-CoV-2, to enter the host cells.

Scientists have been working to understand the functional significance of these mutations and how deadly or infectious the virus is.

In the newest study, the virus with the D614G mutation into the human liver, colon cells, lung. They also introduced the new version of this virus without the mutation that found early on this pandemic into these same cell types for comparison. They also found that the virus becomes more resistant to being split by other proteins for the spike protein, made by mutation. 

They recognised that findings on the increased contagious of the D614G variant may influence COVID-19 vaccine development.

According to the researchers, it may be beneficial for future booster shots to incorporate diverse kinds of spike protein from different circulating variants.

This is because the vaccines with emergency use authorization, moreover as those under development, were created using the first spike sequence, they said.

Studies are ongoing to know how well these vaccines protect against the variants that emerged within the UK, South Africa, and Brazil, all of which contain the D614G mutation.
