Optomec releases cost-effective, efficient 3D bio-printer

bioxone October 31, 2020October 30, 2020

We are already known to the wonders of three-dimensional bioprinting (3D printing). The technology majorly involves techniques to combine cells, growth factors, and biomaterial to fabricate biomedical parts that maximally imitate natural tissue characteristics. 3D bioprinting involves layer after layer deposition of biomaterials like bioinks to create tissue-like structure, which can be used in tissue engineering fields.

Bio inks are composed of the cells that are being used, along with some additional materials (agarose, collagen, polysaccharides, polyethylene glycol (PEG)) that envelop the cells. Bio ink is nothing else than a combination of cells and biopolymer gels. Bioinks used should be capable of performing all biofunctional, mechanical characteristics without any complications.

Optomec has signed a contract to deliver a new industrialized 3D Printed Electronic system to most US healthcare manufacturers. The new printer comprises of most advanced operator friendly-software and production processes. This application will replace manual integration of flex circuits by using Aerosol Jet to directly print multi-layered 3D circuitry into a structural component thereby resulting in a reduction in costs and improvement of the yield compared to earlier methods. This will also help facilitate the flexibility for next-generation designs. By printing circuit components directly onto the device, the size was reduced by 50%, therefore making it comfortable and easy to wear.

The Aerosol Jet process can print conductive, insulating, adhesive, and biological materials in 3D space with dimensions of 10um. The industrialized platform is equipped with high precision 4-axis motion of 250 X 250 X 300 mm, supporting a work envelop that can sufficiently produce large as well as small batch production of medical electronics. The machine is also equipped with a traceability capability that can record and archive all manufacturing data. Apart from these the machine also comprises a facility for creating production scripts for repetitive processing. This device is also equipped with advanced process monitoring cameras for automatic device alignment and optical inspection. The innovative function of this device is that it includes automation that can reduce the loading and unloading time for more efficient processing and reducing the workload of the operator.
