mRNA-1273: A COVID vaccine for the old?

bioxone October 1, 2020October 1, 2020

Prama Ghosh, Amity University Kolkata

Severity and death from Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) are associated with the older population; testing such vaccine candidates is important to prevent infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

A phase 1, open-label trial with an escalated dose of messenger RNA vaccine, mRNA-1273, which encodes the stabilized prefusion SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S-2P) was conducted on 40 older adults (56 to >71 years). On receiving two doses of 25 μg or 100 μg of the vaccine for 28 days apart, adverse effects were mainly mild or moderate.

Shortly after the first immunization, binding-antibody responses rapidly increased. Higher binding- and neutralizing-antibody titers were induced in 100-μg dose than the 25-μg dose, thus, supporting the use of 100-μg dose in a phase 3 vaccine trial. Funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the vaccine also elicited a strong CD4 cytokine response involving type 1 helper T cells.

Area 32 establishes parity between your cognitive abilities and emotional expression

bioxone October 2, 2020

Sristi Raj Rai, Amity University Kolkata Throughout the evolution of the primate’s brain from the rear end to the foremost part – the prefrontal cortex (PFC) makes Homo sapiens the most intelligent species known on this planet. PFC, the rational part of the brain has evolutionarily specialized cognitive abilities such as complex decision making. Due […]

Inborn errors of immunity & corresponding protein interactions

bioxone August 18, 2021August 18, 2021

Avani Dave, Jai Hind College Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are a group of approximately 400 monogenic diseases characterized by recurring, severe, or uncommon infections, as well as autoimmunity and autoinflammation. The synthesis of the clinical phenotype, the findings of immunological testing, and the results of genetic testing have identified the main pathogenic mutations required […]

Human Cerebral Organoids Test for CJD Treatment

bioxone March 16, 2021March 16, 2021

Thota Kanishka Rao, Amity University Kolkata In almost two years, after evolving a human cerebral organoids system to work Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), researchers have further studied a model to screen drugs for budding CJD treatment.  Human Cerebral Organoids are small bundles of human synapses generated using human skin cells. They range from the size of […]

Understanding gene-disease association via machine learning

DNA tales August 11, 2021August 10, 2021

Kanikah Mehndiratta, MSc, University of Glasgow Understanding the association between diseases and the potential genes involved can be challenging. Usually, scientists prefer biomedical experiments to explore the underlying genetics of a complex disease. But the experiments turn out to be very expensive and time consuming. They also pose risk for human error which can lead […]
