Researchers from Kingston University have found out an effective, natural eye drop for the infants who are subjected to a bacterial infection that causes blindness, without causing any kind of irritation. ‘Gonorrhoea’ which is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria “Neisseria gonorrhoeae” is resistant to the antibiotics used to nurse it. This contamination can be passed down from a pregnant mother to the baby and infect the eye if it not treated at the right time can ultimately lead to permanent blindness.

The research team from Kingston University has been surveying the prospective of the antimicrobial agent ‘monocaprin’ standing as an alternative measure to the treatment against gonorrhoea infections. The researchers trust that it has the probability to both eradicate the growing threat of the antibiotic resistance and also an easy-to-produce medication in the different parts of the world where accessing treatment is harder.

What is MONOCAPRIN?

It is a ‘monoglyceride’, which is indeed a modified fatty acid and the research team noted that it has the potentiality to kill ‘Neisseria gonorrhoeae’. The major journal Scientific Reports by Nature Research, the team has shown how it can be managed in an eye-drop without causing any irritation. The preparation was so far examined on bovine eyes obtained from abattoirs; the next step is to go for the human trials. Researchers are searching for natural agents which are high in monocaprin. 

Thus, monocaprin eye-drop stands as proof of how materials extracted from nature are useful to combat different critical conditions.
