Besides being the most common beverages drank all over the world, Green tea and Coffee have lots of other health benefits. Throughout history, their benefits have been studied on cardiovascular diseases and cancer. A recent article, published in the Journal under American Stroke Association, called Stroke, talked about how regular consumption of Green tea and Coffee can lower the risk of death after a heart attack and among healthy people how it can prevent Heart attack and Stroke.
A study was conducted across 45 communities of Japan, consisting of 46,000 participants from the ages 40-79 out of which 60% were a woman. The study consisted of self-administered questioners that included questions on diet, lifestyles, medical history, and demographics. Once that was done, the participants were grouped into 3 categories- Those who had a history of stroke, those who had a history of Myocardial Infarction, and those who had no such problems.
It was observed that people who had a history of stroke and consumed around 7 cups of green tea daily lowered their risk of death by about 62% when compared to those who did not consume green tea daily.
Heart attack survivors who drank 1 cup of coffee a day reduced the risk of death by 22% in contrast to those who did not drink the same.
From the above research, we conclude that indeed consumption of these refreshing beverages prolongs our chances of healthy living. An important thing we must keep in mind is to avoid the addition of unnecessarily high amounts of sugar in these as they could lead to side effects like diabetes or obesity. The lesser the amount of sweetening agents, the healthier is the drink.
This study was mainly conducted based on observation and the underlying causes for these wonderful effects are yet to be determined. Nature indeed is wonderful; all we must do is have a curious mind and sharp observation skills. In the words of Sir Albert Einstein, “Subtle is the Lord, but malicious he is not”.
