Brain-Eating Amoeba: A water monster?

bioxone September 26, 2020September 27, 2020

Prama Ghosh , Amity University Kolkata

Brazosport Water Authority, a water treatment plant in Lake Jackson, Texas, showed the presence of Brain-Eating Amoeba, Naegleria fowleri late Friday around 9:30 p.m. A “do not use” advisory was issued across the plant’s service area shortly after.

Discovered in 1965, Naegleria fowleri infects the human body by entering through the nose when exposed to contaminated water. The amoeba causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. The organism thrives on warm water and is common in Florida and Texas.

Previous reports suggested that, in 2013,  Arkansas teen Kali Hardig, a 14-year-old from Kolkata survived PAM, while 10 year old from Kerala died from the same.

The advisory restrained people from using water from the plant for any purpose until the issue are resolved. The advisory will remain until the water system is adequately flushed and free from the amoeba.
