Diabetes has been a great area of concern for many people especially due to changing lifestyles as well as due to genetic reasons. Type 2 diabetes as of now affects 10% of the population worldwide and currently, the treatments which are prescribed by doctors involve lifestyle changes, insulin shot or diabetes medicines these things help manage the blood sugar or glucose levels, but researchers have shown that antacid can help improve the blood sugar level, they don’t reduce the risk of diabetes but help manage the blood sugar level.
Brief About the Study:
The researchers worked on the meta-analysis of the Proton pump inhibitors, a commonly used type of antacid medication, to show whether they can subsidize the risk of diabetes on various groups of people. This analysis included seven studies that were done on 342 participants to show glycemic control and five studies were done on 244, 439 participants for the risk of incident diabetes. The objective of this study was to show or evaluate the PPI therapy on glycemic control among participants suffering from diabetes and also to check how this therapy helps people to prevent diabetes, especially those who are highly likely to get diabetes.
Results:
Here they compared glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) or Fasting blood glucose (FBG) on the participants who took PPI therapy vs those who didn’t take the PPI therapy. It’s important to note here that PPI therapy was an add-on to the ongoing diabetes treatment that the participants were already taking. To conduct the study, they performed dual independent review, data extraction, and quality assessment.
The study showed that an antacid medication can decrease HbA1c levels by 0.36% and also lower the Fasting blood glucose by 10 mg/dl in people suffering from diabetes, based on the seven clinical trials performed on 342 participants. For people who did not have diabetes, the study showed that antacid cannot help prevent it.
Conclusion:
Through this study, it was seen that antacid can be an important part of the treatment for diabetes as it helps to reduce the blood sugar levels, according to the author of the study, Kashif Munir (M.D). People who are suffering from diabetes should know about these antacid medications and the people prescribing their treatment should also provide them with this useful information. According to this study, PPI medication like Omeprazole can be used but then again, it’s important to note here that Omeprazole is not technically an antacid. Esomeprazole, Lansoprazole, and Omeprazole are three medications that can be used in PPI therapy as these are available over the counter i.e., without prescription.

Marine Invasions: Asymmetry and Extent of Predation
Husna, Amity University Kolkata Marine biological invasion is the process by which a foreign species gets introduced to a new environment where it can negatively alter and invade the native species. One of the major challenges is to understand the cause of spatial variation in biological invasions across local-to-global scales. “What makes a successful invasion?”, […]
