After Black and White Fungus, the first case of “Yellow Fungus” has been reported from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. A 45-year-old patient, resident of Sanjay Nagar in Harsh Hospital was found to have symptoms of Yellow Fungus. The patient also had symptoms of Black and White Fungus, according to an ENT specialist, Dr Tyagi, quoted by news agency ANI. Although not much information is available about the case, doctors expect this to be extremely dangerous. The nature and pathology of the infection are yet to be confirmed by health experts. According to microbiologist Kulkarni, these fungi (black, white or yellow) do not usually infect human beings but patients with a weak immune system often fall prey to their attack.
Yellow Fungus (Mucor septicus L.) infection is considered much scarier than Black or White fungus. This is because of how it affects the internal organs of the body. It starts internally, brings about lethargy and loss of appetite, causes pus leakage, malnutrition, and sunken eyes, and slows down the wound healing process. Other devastating symptoms such as organ failure and acute necrosis may occur in serious cases of infection. According to Dr Tyagi, it is a deadly infection so it is extremely crucial to note the slightest symptoms that might occur which could be helpful in the early detection and treatment of the disease.
Causes
Most fungal infections of this kind are associated with unsanitary conditions. The fungus thrives mostly in unhygienic and humid environments. So maintenance of proper sanitation, cleanliness, and hygiene is required to fight the disease.
The causes are:
• Poor hygiene
• Contaminated resources
• Overuse of steroids
• Poor oxygen use
Treatment
Currently, Amphotericin B injection is the only known treatment for the disease. It is an antifungal medicine that is used for the treatment of patients with Yellow Fungus infection.
