A recently reported case was taken where a 40-year-old US women’s brain lining was punctured after her nasal swab test for COVID-19 which ultimately lead to the leakage of the brain fluid through her nose, and eventually putting her at risk of life-threatening infection. The patient had an undetected scarce condition and the test might have been carried out improperly, an order of doubtful events which means the risk from the nasal test remains low.
A senior author in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery claimed that people who are subjected to extensive sinus and skull surgery must opt for oral test for COVID-19. Some of the practitioners also claimed that the women might have gone for the nasal test ahead of elective hernia surgery and later noticed clear fluid coming out from her nose. Indeed, the women had been treated for intracranial hypertension which led to the leakage of the fluid.
On a contrary note, people are afraid to conduct the nasal swab test for COVID-19 since they feel that their brain lining might be ruptured. It is extremely unlikely for a person who doesn’t have any pre-existing weakness in the nose to cause any damage by the swab test. It must be remembered that the inside of the nose travels back and not upwards. So, any swab test should involve directing the point towards the tonsil.
It must be kept in mind that the nasal test might be uncomfortable but it cannot incidentally harm your brain. It is an important health tool to test who has and who hasn’t got COVID-19
So, don’t be afraid of having your nose swabbed.Reference: https://theconversation.com/no-you-cannot-pierce-your-brain-with-a-swab-test-147364
