BIOTECHNOLOGY SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

Biotechnology has immense potential to improve the lives of people especially the socially and economically weaker sections of society. There are many dedicated individuals and organizations that have brought a positive change in the community through various technological interventions in the areas of livelihood generation, healthcare and hygiene improvement, education and advocacy, skill development and bio-entrepreneurship. In an attempt to recognize such, individuals/ organizations, the Department of Biotechnology invites applications for ‘Biotechnology Social Development Awards’ from Government/Non-Government Organisations / Individuals for the year 2019. The applicant must be a citizen of India and can be an Individual/ Extension Scientist/ Teacher/ NGO/ Organization. Individuals/Organisations who have received the award earlier are not eligible to apply. 03 awards are conferred annually 02 in the ‘Individual’ category and 01 for ‘Organisation’. Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5.00 lakhs along with a citation and trophy.

The objective of the Award:

This is an attempt to honor and thereby popularize the role of biotechnology in bringing about change in the lives of people by delivering essential needs to our community such as healthcare and hygiene, generating more avenues for livelihoods, empowering people and developing local/social entrepreneurs, producing skilled workers & advocacy.

Nature of the Award:

The award is meant to honor the efforts of the individual/NGO who have brought a positive change in the lives of the community in the areas of livelihood generation, healthcare & hygiene improvement, education & advocacy, skill development & growth of regional entrepreneurs. The awardees can be an individual/ extension scientist/teacher/NGO/Organization. The Department would announce three awards annually: two for Individuals and one for Organization. All the three Awards would be of Rs. 5.00 Lakhs each in cash and citation.

Frequency: Annual

Eligibility: The awardees can be any individual or organization including women entrepreneurs/scientists/ women social workers/ social organizations that have done outstanding work in the field of societal outreach. Scientists/teachers engaged in DBT funded projects are also eligible to apply. The terminal stages of the extension/ social work submitted for the award, including its impact assessment must have been completed during the five years proceeding the year of the award.

Administration of the Award: There will be a Committee consisting of 3-5 members, including the chairperson, and appointed by the DBT. The Committee will evaluate the nominations and make recommendations to the DBT. No award shall be given if none of the entries received is judged to be outstanding.
