The purpose of living life is not just to be happy or to be successful in a particular field but, to be honourable and to be able to empathize with the people suffering around you. That happiness and pleasure which you get after helping a needy person can’t be counted on fingers. Today is the 8th of May, 2021, known as the World Red Cross Day. On this day the founder of the International Committee of the red cross (ICRC) and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Henry Dunant was born.
The World Red Cross day is celebrated to honour and pay tribute to millions of volunteers, and staff members across the world who help to protect human life and health. The idea of the Red Cross came up just after the first world war happened and it contributed to peace.
ICRC is a non-governmental organization with the motto of protecting human life, relieving human suffering during disaster and emergencies, providing them with food, shelter, health and helping the family of a victim to get back on their feet as it provides relief services to injured soldiers by organizing nursing care and also provides treatment for people who live in a vulnerable area. It also provides financial help to suffering people. According to statistics around 240 million people from all over the world have received the advantage of free assistance from Red Cross Society workers .It has also helped in reducing the death rate.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has 11.7 million active volunteers who work intending to create a peaceful environment by minimising human suffering. Every volunteer work by keeping in mind the seven basic principles of the Red Cross Society which are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, Universality and Unity.
After the Covid-19 outbreak, IFRC has also coordinated with various National societies which are engaged in quarantine, screening, home-based and hospital care, for providing technical support by issuing advisories and personal protective equipment (PPE) kits.
World red cross day can be celebrated by arranging programmes to help poor suffering people in need and serve them free of cost. Blood donation camps and programs can be arranged as well to spread awareness. Any natural disaster can’t be prevented but we can surely prepare ourselves to face the situation and fight back.
