Vaccines for children: as the race against COVID surges!

bioxone April 13, 2021April 13, 2021

Thota Kanishka Rao, Amity University Kolkata

With the COVID-19 vaccine doing its rounds thorough out the world, the chances of contracting other variants of the virus are rising rapidly. At present, the vaccine provides an 85-90% immunity from the initial virus but is not known to be immune against the mutated versions of the virus.

The Covid-19 vaccine has already been given to the frontline workers, which includes doctors, medical staff, and others, while, at present, the elderly are being vaccinated. With the adults being vaccinated, the attention now turns towards vaccinating children, as cases rise in the UK.

Doctors have said that cases of children contracting the virus are on the rise, though it has not risen dramatically. The situations have worsened as the people need to be vaccinated before contracting the variants. Though with each passing day, the number of variants is increasing, there hasn’t been a noticeable increase in MIS-C. Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is rare, but a serious complication of COVID-19 in children.

In Ohio, more than 3.7 million people have undergone vaccination, however, there hasn’t been an FDA COVID-19 vaccine approved for children under the age of 16, while on the other hand, few teens insisted that they don’t want a shot of the vaccine even it was available to them. Recently, the government of Ohio ordered a rapid vaccination drive for children, as they would want the children to get vaccinated before schools were reopened.

Families have insisted that they are concerned about the health of their children and they are doing the best to remain healthy until the younger children get vaccinated.

With the increase in covid cases, wearing mask, sanitization and staying at home can only be the precautions. Now, its important for the masses to be vaccinated and children’s too. As in Uk, children are getting affected by the virus; the Government should take decisions about vaccinating the children soon along with the masses.
