March: Colorectal cancer awareness month

bioxone March 3, 2021March 3, 2021

Husna, Amity University Kolkata

March is the month of colorectal cancer awareness, so let’s put a spotlight on the risk associated with colorectal cancer and its prevention. Colorectal cancer is also known as colon cancer and it affects the large intestine.

It has long been known to be the middle-aged man’s disease but this is a myth as it affects both men and women relatively equally. In recent years more women and younger people are also dealing with it and it’s the third most common cancer affecting males and females relatively equally. The risk factors associated with the development of this cancer include obesity, a diet including fats and processed meat, genetics, old age, diabetes, or alcohol/nicotine consumption

Colorectal cancer develops due to the accumulation of cells in the intestinal lining which results in polyps. The polyps when left untreated, contribute to the development of colorectal cancer.

The symptoms of this disease include rectal bleeding, persistent bowel issues, blockage of the GI tract, and inability to pass the stools. These symptoms appear when cancer has already reached its advanced stage and is hard to cure. That’s why screening early could help to prevent the formation of colon cancer. The recommended age for screening and colonoscopies is at the age of 45. However, in case if any young person suffers from
inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis) or if anyone has a family history of colorectal cancer then these patients should consult their physician about when they should begin the screening.

Colonoscopy which is performed for screening is a very safe and quick procedure. It’s performed under anesthesia so you don’t feel anything but the worst part is that you have to clean out your colon a day before with a special laxative drink. But this one annoying day can ultimately save your life.
