New metabolic methods for the treatment of Glaucoma

The incurable eye disease Glaucoma leads to partial or total vision loss in approximately 80 million people. Therefore, it was extremely crucial to find a way around this complicated disease; the relation between metabolic disturbance in the nerve cells in the retina and high intraocular pressure. Moreover, in animal models, scientists have found a blockage in the cell’s ability to change glucose into other capable molecules, one of that is pyruvate.

The three main risk factors in glaucoma are genetic predisposition, high intraocular pressure, and age. There is only one treatment currently available for this disease is to target the pressure point in the eye with eye drops or surgery; even then, the risk of blindness in one eye is very high. 

Witnessing the risks involved analyzers specifically studied the correlation between eye pressure points and a low amount of pyruvate. When an extra layer of pyruvate was added, it worked as a protective layer in animal models during clinical trials. This connection needs to be studied more closely. Later tissue models, RNA sequencing, metabolomics can help give results. Meanwhile, advanced developments to improve the metabolism of retinal cells are also underway.

Studying glaucoma for many years, now the advances have seen an improved version of vision in participants. On the other hand, research for a new biomarker for the disease is underway. The researchers are enthusiastic about this discovery and have given optimistic statements to support this development.
