Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is often an imperative ingredient for cooking in every household. Alarmingly, Potato Cyst Nematodes (PCN) derived from the genus Globodera spp. are causing acute losses in potato-producing-industries worldwide. Despite knowing the importance of potatoes in our lives, very little is known about the cyst nematodes that are attacking them in Colombia. A research survey conducted by Daniela Vallejo et. al. showed that out of 75 samples collected from different geographic locations, 57% of them tested positive for PCN.

Out of all the nematode populations, one was identified as Globodera pallida, having morphometric variation . With morphometric variation and phylogenetic analysis of the internally transcribed spacer region of the rRNA gene, and D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S rRNA gene, G. pallida became a monophyletic group that is closely associated with Peruvian populations of potato. To be precise, this experimental assay and formulated research work is the first comprehensive survey of its kind, one that is a concoction of both morphological and genetic data. The research reports species diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the Globodera populations originating from Colombia, so that it may help to elucidate the status and distribution of Globodera species, and eventually lead to the development of accurate management strategies for combating the potato cyst nematodes (PCN).
