The potentiality of Honey in The Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus?

“Honey” is most commonly used in Supportive and Substitute Medicine mainly in the Indian Ayurvedic Medicine since ancient times, as an additive in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. But in recent times the use of honey gained effective potential for the treatment of diabetes because of the increase in the availability of the pharmacological and the objective findings relating to the health benefits.

Various opinions exist relating to the potentiality of honey in diabetes mellitus. But the present review suggests various issues, misconceptions, challenges, and the future perspective regarding the use of honey for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. A thorough review was carried on by probing the anti-diabetic claims of honey through online databases.

A total of 20 pre-clinical and 25 clinical investigated studies helped in the consideration of the potentiality of the anti-diabetic effect of honey. The in-vivo study is limited but the findings strengthen the multi-targeted effect of honey wound-healing, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory as well as hypoglycaemic activities. The clinical and the preclinical study suggested that honey may own multi-faceted and the adjunct effects resulting in a finer glycaemic control and also the mitigated oxidative stress-evoked diabetic problems.

The findings remain still in a limit. But the clinical studies permitted to reach for upgrade conclusions.
