Is Diabetes as dangerous and wicked as COVID-19?

Diabetes has long been mistaken for being a tame problem with a manageable issue. The most renowned approach in diabetes is to empower experts to create , technologies, algorithms, models and therapies to manage glucose in a definite, controlled condition. Attempts to tackle the issue of diabetes till now are authoritative and biased For eg, approving self-announced specialists to create clinical rules that are thought to be embraced broadly, or financial proportioning of access to new gadgets and treatments for those who can afford. Therefore, diabetes hasn’t been tackled as it’s not a tame and manageable issue and it is as wicked as COVID-19. 

Wicked issues are ones that can’t be managed, as scientific solutions to the societal problems are destined to fail. COVID-19 is a wicked problem due to the disproportionate effect of infection on minority racial and ethnic populations. It has made us move away from the face to face medical care toward virtual visits with telehealth but the extent of individuals without digital access is outstandingly higher among ethnic minorities. For instance, in the USA one in four adults with Medicare don’t have digital access which shows telehealth isn’t favourable for all. So, the COVID-19 model shows that there’s no single, right, and unequivocal response to any wicked issue.

When addressing diabetes as a wicked problem, social and biological factors should be integrated within technological developments to create a compassionate technology that is adaptive and affordable for majority both in terms of a personal burden and financial cost for the user. Good clinicians are skilled at locating where the trouble is and choosing activities that will work, which can address a wicked and challenging problem like diabetes.
