Thrombosis in Lungs- An eminent risk for recovered Covid-19 patients too?

The novel Coronavirus continues to spread massively around the world. Globally, Scientists have been working round-the-clock in understanding the virus, hereby, hoping to put a stopper in death!

Recently researchers from Kentucky College of Medicine had conducted a study with the blood of 30 Covid-19 patients divided into groups – The first group included the 15 inpatients kept in intensive care units, the second group comprised 15 outpatients and the third group was a control group of 8 disease-free volunteers.

Studies led by the researchers indicated the circumscribed inflammation in the lungs, may potentially be the cause for increased blood clots in COVID-19 infected patients and it also exhibits that the risk of thrombosis could endure post-recovery.

Compared to the baseline the ‘Corona’ infected patients have elevated levels of tissue factor(a protein found in the blood that initiates blood clotting) and decreased level of protein S (an anticoagulant that prevents blood clotting). It has been reported that localized inflammation in the lungs leads to a reduction in protein S. Also, immune and endothelial cell activation further increase in tissue factors.

Evident studies showed that protein S deficiency continued to be seen in patients, post-recovery from Covid-19. This can be a cause for concern as viruses like HIV persists long term deficiency in protein S, causing an ongoing risk of thrombosis in patients.

Though it is not yet known if Covid-19 could actually persist a similar protein S deficiency. If the parameters are not corrected post-COVID-19 recovery, then long-term monitoring of thrombotic risk may be necessary.
