The Chinese authorities attested that a various number of people in northwest China have tested positive for brucellosis, a bacterial disease which is supposedly infected through livestock carrying the bacteria Brucella, due to an outbreak that generated from a leak at a biopharmaceutical factory in the previous year. The factory used expired disinfectants during the production of the Brucella vaccine for veterinary use.
The disease might have side effects like inflamed testicles and lead to male infertility. According to The United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the disease, also called Malta fever or Mediterranean fever, may cause not only subsiding symptoms like headaches, muscle pain, fever, and fatigue but also chronic symptoms like arthritis or swelling of specific organs.
The CDC stated that although brucellosis is scarcely caused by human-to-human transmission, it is spread through airborne or consumption of contaminated food. Initial estimation was that few individuals were infected but testing of 21,000 people demonstrated a much higher number which lifted widespread distress over the disease’s consequences.
