Do dreams have any relation with neurological disorders?

bioxone September 19, 2020September 19, 2020

-Anuska Sen, Team bioXone

The word “dreams” is quite a commonly used one. There are indeed numerous cultural, religious, and historical explanations regarding the occurrence of dreams. But the exact underlying scientific purpose and mechanism of dreams have not yet been understood. This has led to years of intensive research in oneirology (the scientific study of dreams).

Very recently, researcher Francesca Siclari and group have reported that dreams could be successfully correlated with certain activities of the human brain. With the help of various neuroimaging approaches, they could draw clear relations between dreams and patterns of brain activity as well as with neurological disorders.

Dreams not only cause mental or psychological effects, but it also affects the physiological and behavioral aspects of a person. The influence of dreams on a person is such that the body can even act out the events in the dream. They perceive the dream body as a distinctive entity. For instance, the study reported that patients suffering from a disorder as grave as congenital paraplegia (malformed nervous system since birth) could walk in their dreams. Similarly, various other neurological disorders such as parasomnia, sleep apnoea, etc. show distinct dream patterns.

Surely, this study will be a great aid in future oneirological investigations performed.
