Monitoring Brainwaves: Early Drug Non-Response detection can revolutionize the treatment of Depression

bioxone September 17, 2020September 17, 2020

–Sampriti Roy, Asutosh College

The 21st-century treatment of depression involving psychotherapy and eclectic approaches has undoubtedly come a long way from earlier methods (like lobotomies). However, the standard treatment of MDD (Major Depression Disorder) today with antidepressants- normally SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) can take around 4 weeks to months to show response-a duration that’s often longer than a patient can afford.

A recent study presented at the ECNP (European College of Neuropsychopharmacology) Congress by a team of the University of Basel, led by Dr Thorsten Mikoteit, suggests that it may be possible to detect the efficiency of treatment sooner. The monitoring and interpreting of brainwaves (technically, measuring prefrontal theta cordance) during REM sleep provides response data and directs further treatment strategies. This method, if replicated and found consistent in larger studies, will shorten the average duration between the administration and non-response detection of antidepressants, initiate correct treatment quicker and ultimately, save lives.
